The Key Is Communication

The key to having a relationship with a rock solid foundation is communication. What I discovered is that I may have a clear understanding of what I am attempting to communicate, but my partner being wired completely different may have his own way of unpacking what I have said.

The end result of a communication that is unclear is usually one filled with turmoil. This is the exact opposite of what anyone wants if they truly are desiring to live a life filled with peace and happiness.

I noticed recently that I had a chance to clarify something that was being communicated to me. Instead of choosing to be crystal clear in my understanding I made an assumption.

It could easily have turned into a major disaster. The result was phenomenal, but only because I chose to see it as a learning opportunity.

What I was taught from that experience is that you need to take it one step further if you are unclear in any way. My advice to you is not to leave anything hanging. Make sure to elucidate what has been communicated.

Time and time again you find yourself in a situation where someone says something and you assume that they meant one thing, but in truth it could be interpreted very differently. Whether you are too embarrassed to ask or you just know that you are correct in your interpretation you react in a manner that is in your mind befitting of what you thought was meant by what was said. You can end up with a monumental misunderstanding and with severe repercussions on the relationship.

You can usually trace back these misunderstandings to poor communication. When we make assumptions that we know, we can find ourselves writing stories and withdrawing our love. A deep and wide chasm can be created, which is not what you want.

Take the time to clarify what was being communicated to you. It will definitely save you from a great deal of aggravation and heartache.

Clarify, clarify, clarify!
